His & Hers Cocktails - Bourbon & Campari

Summer is slowly winding down.  The days are getting shorter and cooler weather cocktails are on the brain.  I'm looking forward to the day where the wife and I can comfortably sit back out on the porch and enjoy a cocktail without the need of multiple fans.

But today is not the day.  Instead, we're offering two refreshing cocktails both containing bourbon and Campari.  These cocktails are essentially the same but deliver two very different drinks.  Campari is an acquired taste.  If you still find it too bitter on the palate, then I would suggest trying her cocktail and even lessen the amount to 1/2 oz.  Better yet, if you want a mid-week cocktail, try sipping on Campari and soda.  Start off with a ratio of 3 parts plain soda water to 1 part Campari.  When they becomes easier to palate try bumping it to a 2:1 ratio.  Next thing you know, the Negroni will be your new best friend.

His Ingredients - Italian Gentleman
1 1/2 oz Campari
1 1/2 oz bourbon (Buffalo Trace)
3/4 oz fresh lemon juice
1/4 oz simple syrup
Orange bitters
Lemon twist for garnish

In a cocktail shaker filled with ice, add all ingredients except garnish.  Shake until well chilled.  Strain into a rocks or coupe glass filled with ice.  Garnish with a lemon twist.

Her Cocktail - Third Man (Patrick Halloran via Henrietta Red)
1 1/2 oz bourbon (Buffalo Trace)
1 oz fresh grapefruit juice
3/4 oz fresh lemon juice
3/4 oz Campari
1/2 oz simple syrup
Grapefruit twist for garnish

In a cocktail shaker filled with ice, add all ingredients except garnish.  Shake until well chilled.  Strain into a rocks glass filled with ice.  Garnish with a grapefruit twist.

Simple Syrup
Combine equal parts sugar and water in a saucepan over medium low heat.  Stir until sugar has dissolved and remove from heat before it comes to a boil.  Allow to cool.  Will keep several weeks in fridge.

Happy drinking!
