It's winter time. Covid-19 is still rampant. Grocery store runs are few and far between so that means my fridge currently contains enough citrus fruits to prevent my entire neighborhood from coming down with scurvy. Instead, I say it's time to juice some up for tonight's cocktails!
The wife stumbled across these recipes while we were stationed in Kodiak. For those who don't know, there were basically 2-3 grocery stores to shop at on the entire island. Freshness was always questionable and prices were high. Finding premium mixers and specialty liqueurs proved challenging (and don't even get me started on how hard it was to find fresh mint for the Kentucky Derby) so we kept cocktails simple. Base spirits, fruit juices and a few dashes of bitters and you had yourself a Kodiak cocktail. But sometimes simple is best and we hope you agree.
His Cocktail - The Ward 8
2 oz Rye Whiskey (Rittenhouse)
1/2 oz fresh lemon juice
1/2 oz fresh orange juice
1/4 oz grenadine
2 dashes Angostura bitters
Combine all ingredients in a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake until chilled. Strain into a well chilled rocks glass.
Her Cocktail - Gin & Sin
1 1/2 oz Gin
1 oz fresh lemon juice
1 oz fresh orange juice
1/2 tsp grenadine
Combine all ingredients in a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake until chilled. Strain into a well chilled coupe glass.
Happy drinking!
