His & Hers Cocktails - Mississippi Punch

His & Hers Cocktails - Mississippi Punch

I suppose I owe all of you an explanation for our absence.  If you haven't heard, over the past several months, Tactical Gent has been in the process of relocating from South Carolina to Mississippi.  It has taken equally as long for our possessions to arrive to our new home and for us to unpack and settle back down into our normal routines.

While we waited, well over a month for our belongings, we spent our days scrapping, sanding, taping, painting and cleaning.  Don't worry, while we worked like dogs every day, Sir Barkley was spoiled as usual.  While we slept on air mattresses, he had his plush dog bed.  While we sat on hard barstools, he lounged in the only cushiony chair in the house which of course, was bought for the sole intention of it being his chair.....not ours.

Now that we can finally relax in our creature comforts, I couldn't think of a better cocktail to share with you this week than the Mississippi Punch.  David Wondrich wrote that this drink is, "Mississippi history in a glass": French Cognac, American Bourbon, Jamaican/British Rum, Spanish lemon and sugar.   The origin of this cocktail is as elusive as it is tracking down some of these liquors in this state.

My initial thoughts on hearing the name of this cocktail was that it would be an elegant drink for the masses.  Nope.  This drink packs a punch and then some.  Bottom line, this libation smells hard, drinks hard, punches harder and is exactly what we need to toast our faithful followers and welcome y'all to The 'Sip!

His & Hers Cocktail - Mississippi Punch
2 oz Cognac
1 oz Bourbon
1 oz Dark Rum
1/2 oz fresh lemon juice
2 tsp superfine sugar (or sub with simple syrup)
Lemon twist garnish

In a cocktail shaker filled with ice, add all ingredients.  Shake until cold.  Strain into a tall glass filled with ice.  Straws are optional.

Happy drinking!
