St. Patrick's Day. A day filled with leprechauns, lucky clovers, plenty of green clothing, green beer and Bailey's Irish Cream. Wait, what? No. Let's just stop with the green beer, the Bailey's and the Irish Car Bombs while we're at it. Don't get me wrong. There was a time and place for all of that and it was in my early 20's. Now that I'm older, I'd rather have a whiskey cocktail or two to linger over in a nice, quiet house instead of having to push my way through an overcrowded bar to order over priced, horrible tasting, flat, green beer.
Tonight's cocktail provides some green from the cucumber and mint and it's rather refreshing. Now for anyone who is familiar with the Irish Maid, there is another recipe that uses lemon juice and St. Germain instead of the lime juice. Surprisingly, the wife and I found it be a little to sweet for a liking and both preferred the recipe below.
Irish Whiskey Maid (Selanne Steak Tavern)
2 oz Irish Whiskey
1 oz fresh lime juice
3/4 oz simple syrup
3 slices cucumber
Mint sprig
In a cocktail shaker, muddle 2 cucumber slices with the whiskey, lime juice and simple syrup. Add ice and shake until chilled. Strain into a rocks glass filled with ice (or one large ice cube). Garnish with remaining cucumber slice and sprig of mint.
Happy St. Patrick's Day and happy drinking!
