Today's Halloween feature is one of the wife's favorite. She first saw it as a young child and it made a lasting impression. Though a sensation at the box office in 1964, younger generations may not know this film unless they grew up watching TCM.
Let us present, Hush...Hush, Sweet Charlotte. Set in Ascension Parish, LA a middle-aged Southern woman is the prime suspect in the unsolved murder of her lover. Haunted by his death and tormented by the impeding demolition of her home (by the local government), Charlotte asks a relative for help. Strange things begin happening around the home and her worst nightmares seem to become reality. Between Bette Davis' captivating performance, the murky images of the black and white film, and that hauntingly, sad theme song it's no wonder why this psychological thriller would haunt any 8 year old.
Our cocktail, something the wife made up years ago, is something we would imagine as an easy drinking libation, fitting for the Louisiana heat. But drinker beware, this slow creeping concoction will shroud you in a veil of haze making you question your own sanity if you have one too many.
Sweet Charlotte's Delirium
1 oz Cathead Honeysuckle Vodka
1 oz Hendricks Midsummer Solstice
3/4 oz Fresh lemon juice
1/2 oz Simply syrup
1/4 oz St. Germain
Combine all the ingredients in a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake until well chilled. Strain into a coupe glass.
Happy drinking!
