His & Hers Cocktails - Tropical Martini & Mary Pickford

His & Hers Cocktails - Tropical Martini & Mary Pickford

Let's thank social media for today's cocktails.  If I hadn't seen a post that the 16th is National Rum Day, I would probably still be standing at the bar trying to figure out cocktail(s) to make.  Sometimes you just need a little inspiration.

The wife has had the Mary Pickford on her drink list for awhile now.  It's a Prohibition Era cocktail named for the famous silent movie actress, Mary Pickford, from the 1910's-1920's.  Like most Prohibition libations, the base liquor was often times harsh, poorly made and at times, lethal (think bathtub gin).  To hide the flavor, fruit juices and other mixers were added to the cocktail to make it more palatable.  Obviously they did something right as it's still a popular choice in today's bars.

The Tropical Martini comes from City Cellar in West Palm Beach.  Personally, I think the Luxardo is a bit much and would cut the ratio down to 1/2 oz next time. But give it a try and let me know what you think. His Cocktail - Tropical Martini (City Cellar)
2 oz Flor de Cana Rum
1 oz Luxardo Maraschino Liqueur
1/2 oz Fresh pineapple juice
1/2 oz Fresh orange juice
1/2 oz Cranberry juice

In a cocktail shaker filled with ice, add all ingredients.  Shake until chilled.  Strain into a coupe/martini glass.
