His & Hers Cocktails- Grapefruit Bourbon & Basil Grapefruit

Sunday will see us "springing forward" with the beginning of Daylight Savings.  Though the sun spooked the groundhog into predicting 6 more weeks of winter, our household is torn between the seasons.  Warming weather trends and maturing plant seedlings has the wife anticipating an early spring.  I'm still grasping for every last bit of the cold weather before retiring the winter clothing for the remainder of the year.

In honor of both of our views, I think I found the perfect cocktails to celebrate the last hooray of winter and the welcoming of spring.  Grapefruit, a winter citrus that's currently in season, brings a brightness to these libations.  Basil, fresh from one of the wife's many plants, adds an herbaceous note to the drink.  

Both of these cocktails require a basil simple syrup.  For the recipe, add 1/2 cup each of sugar and water to a small saucepan.  Over medium low heat, stir until the sugar dissolves.  Then turn down the heat, add small handful of basil leaves to the pot and simmer for 5 minutes to infuse the flavor.  Strain the mixture into a container and seal.  This will keep in the refrigerator for a month.His Cocktail - Grapefruit Bourbon Cocktail
3 oz Fresh grapefruit juice
1 1/2 oz Bourbon
1/4 oz Basil simple syrup
3-4 dashes Peychaud's bitters
Club soda (to taste)
Grapefruit twist for garnish

In a cocktail shaker filled with ice, add all the ingredients except the club soda.  Shake until chilled.  Strain into an old-fashioned glass.  Add ice and a splash of club soda.  Garnish.

Her Cocktail - Basil and Grapefruit Cocktail (Tommy the Bartender, TX)
3 oz Fresh grapefruit juice
1 1/2 oz Silver tequila
1/4 oz Basil simple syrup
Grapefruit slice for garnish

In a cocktail shaker filled with ice, add all of the ingredients.  Shake until chilled.  Strain into an old-fashioned glass.  Add ice and garnish.
